An Unexpected Journey to the surface.

In February 2025, near Tenerife Island, an extraordinary event unfolded during a routine shark observation mission. Researchers witnessed a sight that defied expectations, a humpback Anglerfish, a creature typically residing in the ocean's "twilight zone," appeared in the sunlit waters. This deep sea dweller had ventured into unfamiliar territory, captivating all who saw it.

Captured on video by photographer David Jara Boguñá, the sighting of the anglerfish quickly went viral, inspiring imagination and empathy of viewers worldwide. The internet buzzed with reaction videos, memes, and artistic interpretations. This event draws parallels to the Pixies' song "The Happening," which speaks to unexpected events that seize the public's fascination.

The anglerfish’s unexpected journey to the surface resonated with millions around the world, symbolizing courage and transformation. Many saw their own struggles and aspirations reflected in the anglerfish's ascent, challenging perceptions of sea creatures and prompting empathy for these mysterious beings. In this shared recognition of our humanity people said "Hi" like the song, a collective "I see you".

This event (happening) inspired my painting with themes of exploration, travel (life as a journey) and transformation. The work invites viewers to reflect on surrealism, popular culture, and social events, encouraging a deeper understanding of our world and the narratives we create. The motifs of light (seeds) in the artwork symbolize change and transformation, echoing the anglerfish's unexpected journey and its profound impact on our collective consciousness. We are all humans traveling on our blue planet in a vast galaxy and in our shared humanity it's easy to say "Hi"
